Ahoy there Teachers.
I hope this Webquest is a fun way in which you can get your students more excited about learning the bones in their body.
1. I believe this Webquest would work best for 5th or 6th grade students.
2. Students should take away a greater knowledge of the bones inside them. They should learn not only the names and locations of bones, but also their composition and function.
3. Prior to starting this web quest students should be introduced to the differing layers of the body: Skin, Muscle, and bone. They should be told that when you are born you have 300 bones in your body. As you grow, some of the bones fuse together and as an adult you will have 206 bones. Make sure the students understand they won't have to know all 206 bones, merely the main bones of the body--about 18.
4. Each student will need about 2-3hours of computer time. They can work as groups on the computer.
5. My suggestion for grading would be as follows. Assign a points system for each part of the project. For example give each student 10 points for each "map" journal assignment. Make sure the student answers the questions asked at each site as well as sketching out the main bones of the skeletal structure. The "map" is worth about 40 of the 100 total points in this project. The other 60 points will come from viewing the students presentations of the bones. You don't need to grade them based off of the quality of their models, rather their effort and enthusiasm. These sixty points can be broken down more specifically to the areas of the project you deem most important.I hope this Web Quest is helpful and fun for you and your class and doesn't leave you shipwrecked.
